We need to know what’s happening, so we can be prepared. I’m not saying it’s time to start prepping your bunker, but I would like to know if my neighborhood should consider moving to higher ground or stock up on maple syrup.

Climate Change Predictions by “Grist”

~ What climate change will do, region by region according to

the National Climate Assessment of ’18

 

At this point, even the most stubborn among us know that climate change is coming for our asses. We really don’t have much time until the climate plagues we’re already getting previews of — mega-wildfires, rising sea-levels, superstorm after superstorm — start increasing in frequency. The 4th National Climate Assessment says all that and much more is on its way.

Not all regions in the U.S. are going to experience climate change in the same way. Your backyard might suffer different climate consequences than my backyard.

Luckily, that new report — which Trump tried to bury on Black Friday — breaks down climate change’s likely impacts on 10 specific regions. Unluckily, the chapters are super dense.

Silver lining: We at Grist divvied up the chapters and translated them into news you can actually use.

Northeast

Ahh, the Northeast, home to beautiful autumn leaves, delicious maple syrup, and copious amounts of ticks bearing disease. What’s not to love? A lot, according to this report.

Our region is looking at “the largest temperature increase in the contiguous United States” — 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit by the time 2035 rolls around. We’re going to be slammed with the highest rates of sea-level rise in the whole damn country, and we’re going to have the highest rate of ocean warming. Urban centers are particularly at risk (remember Superstorm Sandy?). And if you’re a fan of snuggling up beside the fire in your Connecticut mansion (or whatever), be warned that winters are projected to warm in our region three times faster than summers. That means delayed ski seasons and less time to tap maple trees.

Things are gonna be rough on us humans, but dragonflies and damselflies — two insects literally no one ever thinks about, but that flourish in healthy ecosystems — are pretty much doomed. The report says their habitat could decline by as much as 99 percent by 2080.

Sea-level rise, flooding, and extreme weather poses a mental health threat to Northeasterners. Impacted coastal communities can expect things like “anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.” But it’s not all bad: The assessment portends more intense (read: Instagram-able) fall foliage and more forest growth.

Southeast

If, like me, you love your filthy, dirty South, you’ll be pleased to hear that summer thunderstorms, skeeters, ticks, and hot, muggy weather aren’t going anywhere! (Actually, don’t be pleased. This is serious.)

Southerners are accustomed to warm days followed by warm nights, but as the heat continues to turn up, those nights just might be our downfall. Urban and rural areas alike can expect to sweat through up to 100 additional warm nights per year by the end of this century. Hot, sticky nights make it harder for us to recover from the heat of the day. This is especially bad in parts of many Southeastern cities, where residents suffer from the “heat island effect.”

“I think it’s really important to look at the heat-related impacts on labor productivity,” says chapter author Kirstin Dow, a social environmental geographer at the University of South Carolina. Under one scenario, the Southeast could see losses of 570 million labor hours, amounting to about $47 billion per year — one-third of the nation’s total loss. What’s more, Dow says, “Those changes are going to take place in counties where there’s already chronic poverty.”

Warming waters will also push the infamous lionfish closer to the Atlantic Coast. In addition to being invasive, this freaky-looking fish is venomous, and swimmers and divers can expect more encounters (and stings) as the climate brings them closer to our beaches.

Caribbean

For someone who doesn’t like donning heavy clothing during the winter, the Caribbean has the perfect weather: year-round warm days with ocean breezes. Climate change, according to the report, means we can’t have nice things.

In the near future, the Caribbean will experience longer dry seasons and shorter, but wetter rainy seasons. To make matters worse: During those arid periods, freshwater supplies will be lacking for islanders. And since islands (by definition) aren’t attached to any other land masses, “you can’t just pipe in water,” says Adam Terando, USGS Research Ecologist and chapter author.

The report confirmed something island-dwellers know all too well: Climate change is not coming to the Caribbean — it’s already there. And it’ll only get worse. Disastrous storms the likes of Hurricane Maria — which took the lives of nearly 3,000 Puerto Ricans — are expected to become more common in a warming world.

Another striking result: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are projected to lose 3.6 percent and 4.6 percent of total coastal land area, respectively, posing a threat to critical infrastructure near its shores. The tourism industry will have to grapple with the disappearance of its beaches. Even notable cultural sites aren’t safe: Encroaching seas threaten El Morro — a hulking fortress that sits majestically on the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“Our island is trying to limit its emissions — but we’re not big emitters,” lead chapter author Ernesto L. Diaz, a coastal management expert at Puerto Rico’s Dept. of Natural and Environmental Resources, tells Grist.

Midwest

What’s in store for the Midwest? Oh hello there, crop diseases and pests! Hold onto your corn husks, because maize yields will be down 5 to 25 percent across the region by midcentury, mostly due to hot temps. And soybean hauls will decline more than 25 percent in the southern Midwest.

Beyond wilting crops, extreme heat puts lives at risk. The Midwest may see the biggest increase in temperature-related deaths compared to other regions, putting everyone from farmworkers to city-dwellers at risk. In one particularly bad climate change scenario, late-21st-century Chicago could end up seeing 60 days per year above 100 degrees F — similar to present-day Las Vegas or Phoenix.

The Great Lakes represent 20 percent of freshwater on the world’s surface, but lately, they’re looking … not so fresh. Climate change and pollution from farms are leading to toxic algae blooms and literally starving the water of oxygen.

But hey, there’s a silver lining. Midwesterners (myself included) have developed a bad habit of leaving their homeland for other parts of the country. That trend may reverse. “The Midwest may actually experience migration into the region because of climate change,” Maria Carmen Lemos, a Midwest chapter author and professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability, said in a statement. So while you may have to reconsider your ice-fishing plans, Midwesterners, it could be a whole lot worse.

Northern Great Plains

The Northern Great Plains is far from any ocean. Water melts off mountain snowpack, slowly trickles down glaciers, and pools up in basins. The largely arid region is dominated by thirsty industries like agriculture, energy extraction, and tourism. There’s a byzantine system of century-old water rights and competing interests.

Or as my dad, a Montana cattle rancher, puts it: “Whiskey is for drinking. Water is for fighting.”

Residents might want to steel themselves with a little bourbon as climate change will escalate those water woes, according to the report. Winters will end earlier and snow could decline as much as 25 to 40 percent in the mountainous regions.

It’s not just some far-off problem for cross-country skiers and thirsty critters. The authors point to the behavior of the mountain pine beetle as one example of a climate-influenced tweak that’s had devastating impact. Warmer winters and less precipitation have enabled the bugs to kill off huge swaths of forest in the region.

Lest you think what happens in the Dakotas stays in the Dakotas: While only 1.5 percent of the U.S. population lives in this region, it contributes nearly 13 percent of the country’s agricultural market value.

It’s culturally critical, too: The area is home to 27 federally recognized tribes that are already experiencing climate threats such as a lack of access to safe water and declining fisheries.

Southern Great Plains

The Southern Great Plains flips between heat waves, tornadoes, drought, ice storms, hurricanes, and hail. The weather is “dramatic and consequential” according to the report. It’s “a terrible place to be a hot tar roofer,” according to me, a former Kansas roofer. In a warmed world, none of this improves. Well, maybe the ice storms.

The region will continue to have longer and hotter summers, meaning more drought. Portions of the already shrinking Ogallala Aquifer, which is critical to a huge western swath of the region, could be completely depleted within 25 years, according to the report.

Texas’ Gulf Coast will face sea-level rise, stronger hurricanes, and an expanded range of tropical, mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and Zika. It’ll also experience more intense floods. Many of the region’s dams and levees are in need of repair and aren’t equipped for the inundations.

One of the chapter’s lead authors, Bill Bartush, a conservation coordinator with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, tells Grist that how landowners handle the extremes of water management will be key to climate adaptation. Given the region’s high rates of private land ownership, it’s essential to get them on board.

In weirder news, the region’s Southern Flounder population is declining because the fish’s sex is determined by water temperature. Warmer winters mean more males. It’s like a terrible reboot of Three Men and a Baby, but with more flounder and no baby.

Northwest

The Pacific Northwest has more rain in its winter forecast. That might not sound unusual for a region known for its wet weather, but more winter rain — as opposed to snow — could impact the region’s water supply and entire way of life.

Most of the Northwest relies on melting mountain snow for water during the summer. Climate change will replace more of that snow with rain, which flows downstream right away rather than being stored on mountainsides until the temperatures warm. Less snowmelt during hot summers could damage salmon habitat, dry out farms, harm the region’s outdoor industry, and increase wildfire risk.

“It’s like our tap is on all the time,” said Heidi Roop, a research scientist at the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group, which helped author the chapter.

The report forecasts a lot of change in the Northwest, including flooding and landslides. But rainy winters? That’s one thing that’s not going away anytime soon.

Southwest

“I am large. I contain multitudes,” Walt Whitman said of himself. But he could have very well said it of the Southwest, where stretches of desert give way to soaring, snow-capped mountains. Yet this might not be the case for long. Climate change threatens all of this beautiful ecological diversity, as well as the 60 million people who call this area home, including 182 tribal nations.

The hottest and driest corner of the country is already suffering from heat waves, droughts, and increased wildfires. As a result, the Southwest, to put it bluntly, is running out of water. With water at already record low levels and a population that continues to grow, the region is working on a recipe for water scarcity.

“Lake Mead, which provides drinking water to Las Vegas and water for agriculture in the region, has fallen to its lowest level since the filling of the reservoir in 1936 and lost 60 percent of its volume,” coordinating chapter author Patrick Gonzalez, a climate scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, tells Grist.

In the coming years, temperatures in this region will soar. Droughts, including megadroughts lasting 10 years, will become commonplace. Agriculture will take a steep hit, causing food insecurity. Expect those lovely desert sunsets to take on an unsettling pink, as the snow-capped mountains grow bald.

Alaska

In Alaska, water is life, life is shellfish, shellfish is power. But, alas, climate change is about to do a number on the state’s marine life, food webs, and species distributions. According to the climate assessment, ocean acidification is expected to disrupt “corals, crustaceans, crabs, mollusks,” as well as “Tanner and red king crab and pink salmon.” Lots of indigenous peoples rely on that variety of marine life.

The largest state in the country is already ground zero for climate change. Thawing permafrost means structures are literally sinking into the ground all over the state.

What does a temperature increase really mean? Well, under the worst-case scenario, the coldest nights of the year are projected to warm 12 DEGREES F by midcentury.

I know I said water, either frozen or liquid, is the name of the game in Alaska, but the report says the state should expect more wildfires in the future, too. Under a high-temperature-increase scenario, as much as 120 million acres could burn between 2006 and 2100. That’s an area larger than California.

Oh yeah, and the report says there’s going to be an increase in “venomous insects.” Cheers.

Hawaii and the Pacific Islands

This region houses 1.9 million people, 20 indigenous languages, countless endemic (one-of-a-kind) flora and fauna species, and the freaking Mariana Trench (the world’s deepest point).

Pacific island communities can expect to grapple with the usual climate change suspects: rising sea levels, weird rainfall patterns, drought, flooding, and extreme temperatures. But all those things have unique implications for supplies of island drinking water. In short, like those who live in the Caribbean, these communities’ ability to survive depends on protecting their fresh water.

Extremes in the weather patterns El Niño and La Niña could double in the 21st century, compared to the previous one. El Ninos bring drought, which means Pacific communities have to desalinate water to make up for dwindling rainfall. But rising sea levels contaminate groundwater supplies and aquifers, which basically means Pacific Islanders have it coming from all sides.

Wait, there’s more. Too much freshwater is bad, too. Under a higher-warming scenario, rainfall in Hawaii could increase by 30 percent in wet areas by the end of the century. Think that’s good for dry areas? Think again! Projections suggest rainfall decreases of up to 60 percent in those. So more rain where rain isn’t needed and less rain where it’s dry. Great.

To end things on a sad note — because why the hell not — the National Climate Assessment states that “nesting seabirds, turtles and seals, and coastal plants” are going to be whacked by climate change. 😦

Life on Happiness Road

 

Is there is a magic potion or formula on Earth for happiness? Truly, every person will have their unique set of circumstances, with some common experiences, along ‘the road’ or ‘process’ for attaining and maintaining happiness. I believe true happiness, while consisting of short-term feelings of joy, is long-lasting. In fact, as promised by God to those faithful, happiness is everlasting and eternal.

Goal: State of well-being and contentment; experiencing joy; felicity, aptness; obsolete: good fortune and prosperity.[1]

The perspective from a half dozen sources are incorporated into this essay.

In this day and age, too many equate success with happiness. While prosperity or notoriety may accompany being happy it no longer a prerequisite.

In my opinion, spiritual people have a huge advantage in achieving happiness. Those that believe that all good things come from God and God wants the best for us, our higher power will bless our lives as we receive God’s grace.

Research in the field of positive psychology and happiness often define a happy person as someone who experiences frequent positive emotions, such as joy, interest, and pride, and infrequent (though not absent) negative emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, and anger (Lyubomirsky et al., 2005). Happiness has also been said to relate to life satisfaction, appreciation of life, moments of pleasure, but overall it has to do with the positive experience of emotions.[2]

A key to these explanations is that positive emotions do not indicate the absence of negative emotions. A “happy person” experiences the spectrum of emotions just like anybody else, but the frequency by which they experience the negative ones may differ. It could be that “happy people” don’t experience as much negative emotion because they process it differently or they may find meaning in a way others have not. In fact, using the phrase “happy person” is probably incorrect because it assumes that they are naturally happy or that positive things happen to them more often. Nobody is immune to life’s stressors, but the question is whether one sees those stressors as moments of opposition or moments of opportunity.

According to research, happiness isn’t just a state of mind. It affects your heart rate, your body chemistry, and it could contribute to substantial physical health benefits over time. British results showed that people with higher happiness ratings not only had a lower heart rate, but also had lower levels in their saliva of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, and less concentration in their blood of a plasma that’s connected to heart disease.

While some of the differences between happier individuals and their less happy counterparts were small, the researchers point out the potential impact of these seemingly minor variations over an extended period of time. “If differences of this magnitude are elicited in everyday life when people are exposed to daily hassles and challenges,” they write, “the result could be a marked difference in cardiovascular disease risk.” They also note that lower levels of cortisol are related to reduced long-term risk of abdominal obesity, type II diabetes, hypertension, and immune system problems.

For years, research has shown that reducing depression, stress, anxiety, and other negative states decreases the risk of heart disease and other maladies.

This study has gone a step further by linking a positive emotional state to physical health benefits. Indeed, when the researchers measured their participants’ levels of psychological distress, they found that the physical health benefits of happiness occurred independent of whether or not participants showed any signs of depression or another negative state. This suggests that there may be a distinct biology of happiness that carries its own set of health benefits, beyond the benefits of simply not being depressed. [3]

There are some key factors to keep in mind:

A) Focus on the right things and not critically compare.

  • Each one of us has something to be joyful about, the problem that destroys the feeling of being filled with joy is comparison – when we begin to compare our lives to others and not look at what we have been currently given.
  • It is of high significance in the aspect of discovering joy that we do not look past our gifts and blessings but rather appreciate them and figure out ways on how we can multiply them.
  • Happiness-Joy starts from within, it is a decision one has to make on how they are going to perceive things in their life.

In as much as success may bring as happiness, let us not forget to smile all the way while we strive towards what we desire. Happiness can also be realized one step at a time, one decision at a time, one goal at a time.[4]

b) A ‘mental diet’ for a healthy attitude is very important in life.

The human is a fragile being led by fear, that could engulf himself. Happiness eludes him as he tends to blame other people, the environment, or even fate for this. Woe often she creates the illusion that she is completely helpless to determine her own direction of life. Happiness lies within the human being not riddled by fear, guilt, fate, and bad weather.

Only he can create it. How he succeeds will depend on his attitude and efforts to nurture it. For some individuals, the sense of happiness is brought by material things a new car, winning money, and other people, activities, health. However, only a few keep this feeling for a long time. After some time after the stimulus that caused the feeling of happiness, one wants something new. Feeling a routine, things and people get upset, need innovation. This is because people don’t appreciate what they have.[5]

c) Happiness is not merely a static psychological state.

Aristotle shares a crucial part of happiness, which is staying active. How many “happy” people do you know who sit at home all day, everyday? They might be content or “ok” temporarily, but are they truly thriving in happiness? Happiness is often found in the doing of what you’re passionate about and in building connections that are meaningful to you. Research has supported this with findings showing that strong social support is correlated with a number of positive outcomes. You might be in a rut now and you might have moments where you lose your connection to life, but you always have the opportunity to rebuild that connection.

So now it’s your turn to begin finding the happiness in you. What brings you joy? Maybe it’s a night in watching TV. Maybe it’s a night out at a new restaurant in town. Maybe it’s staying up late watching a movie with your significant other. Maybe it depends on your mood. Wherever your happiness resides, go enjoy it.[6]

d) Be realistic and manage stress.

As the founder of Daily Love, Martin Kipp has said, “I don’t expect to always be happy, I simply accept what is — And that acceptance is key. This is what self-love is all about, really, acceptance and the ability to love yourself right where you are.”

Research suggests that happiness is a combination of how satisfied you are with your life (for example, finding meaning in your work) and how good you feel on a day-to-day basis. Both of these are relatively stable — that is, our life changes, and our mood fluctuates, but our general happiness is more genetically determined than anything else. The good news is, with consistent effort, this can be offset. Think of it like you think about weight: if you eat how you want to and are as active as you want to be, your body will settle at a certain weight. But if you eat less than you’d like or exercise more, your weight will adjust accordingly. If that new diet or exercise regimen becomes part of your everyday life, then you’ll stay at this new weight. If you go back to eating and exercising the way you used to, your weight will return to where it started. So it goes, too, with happiness.

In other words, you have the ability to control how you feel—and with consistent practice, you can form life-long habits for a more satisfying and fulfilling life.[7]

e) Love is what bring happiness.  Loving others and activities.

Unfortunately, if we lack love, we are less likely to have inner happiness or less capable of bringing happiness to others.  We might live doing only what we want in order to get momentary satisfaction, not happiness.  If what we want is of selfish, greed, jealousy, hatred, favoritism, prejudice, we are likely to end up hurting others.  Because we all do it so we all suffer.  To stop suffering and have happiness, we have to forget ourselves and come to God for love.  Forgetting ourselves seem like a big loss but is truly a great gain.  Forgetting ourselves means we are not going to do what we want if it is of selfishness, greed, jealousy, hatred, favoritism, prejudice and therefore we do not hurt others.

Forgetting ourselves get rid of all the times we think of ourselves, of what we want, of how others have hurt us which take us away from reality, make our minds tired, make us suffer. Forgetting ourselves alone doesn’t bring us happiness in itself but is a necessary step.  The next step to happiness is love.  We can get love from thinking about God.  When we think about God, we know and feel love and when we ask for love, God then gives us love.  If we don’t think about God, we are not going to know or feel love.  When we forget ourselves and have love from God, it’s like we lose ourselves but gain far much better, happy selves.[8]

That is the essence to true happiness.

          Scientific American published a special issue, “The Science of Happiness.”[9] A common theme was kindness, gratitude and optimism. A happy person within a social circle quickly influences those around him or her to be happy, extending to three degrees of separation.

Our modern lives are cluttered with circumstances to be unhappy, jet we can become more resilient to stress and nourish our minds similarly as we take care of our bodies through healthy eating and exercise. Long- lasting happiness states are possible by practicing acceptance, gratitude, reexamining attitudes, feeding your sense of humor, smiling, and learning how we might better engage in activities that we love, and find positive outlets for love of our environment, interests, people and God.

Healthy Hugs ~ Try 20 Seconds

The average length of a hug between two people is 3 seconds. But the researchers have discovered something fantastic.

When a hug lasts 20 seconds, there is a therapeutic effect on the body and mind.

The reason is that a sincere embrace produces a hormone called “oxytocin”, also known as the love hormone. This substance has many benefits in our physical and mental health, helps us, among other things, to relax, to feel safe and calm our fears and anxiety. This wonderful tranquilizer is offered free of charge every time we have a person in our arms, who cradled a child, who cherish a dog or a cat, that we are dancing with our partner, the closer we get to someone or simply hold the Shoulders of a friend.

A famous quote by psychotherapist Virginia Satir goes, “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Whether those exact numbers have been scientifically proven remains to be seen, but there is a great deal of scientific evidence related to the importance of hugs and physical contact. Here are some reasons why we should hug::

1. STIMULATES OXYTOCIN

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional centre, promoting feelings of contentment, reducing anxiety and stress, and even making mammals monogamous. It is the hormone responsible for us all being here today. You see this little gem is released during childbirth, making our mothers forget about all of the excruciating pain they endured expelling us from their bodies and making them want to still love and spend time with us. New research from the University of California suggests that it has a similarly civilising effect on human males, making them more affectionate and better at forming relationships and social bonding. And it dramatically increased the libido and sexual performance of test subjects. When we hug someone, oxytocin is released into our bodies by our pituitary gland, lowering both our heart rates and our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

2. CULTIVATES PATIENCE

Connections are fostered when people take the time to appreciate and acknowledge one another. A hug is one of the easiest ways to show appreciation and acknowledgement of another person. The world is a busy, hustle-bustle place and we’re constantly rushing to the next task. By slowing down and taking a moment to offer sincere hugs throughout the day, we’re benefiting ourselves, others, and cultivating better patience within ourselves.

3. PREVENTS DISEASE

Affection also has a direct response on the reduction of stress which prevents many diseases. The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine says it has carried out more than 100 studies into touch and found evidence of significant effects, including faster growth in premature babies, reduced pain, decreased autoimmune disease symptoms, lowered glucose levels in children with diabetes, and improved immune systems in people with cancer.

4. STIMULATES THYMUS GLAND

Hugs strengthen the immune system. The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra. This stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body’s production of white blood cells, which keep you healthy and disease free.

5. COMMUNICATION WITHOUT SAYING A WORD

Almost 70 percent of communication is nonverbal. The interpretation of body language can be based on a single gesture and hugging is an excellent method of expressing yourself nonverbally to another human being or animal. Not only can they feel the love and care in your embrace, but they can actually be receptive enough to pay it forward to others based on your initiative alone.

6. SELF-ESTEEM

Hugging boosts self-esteem, especially in children. The tactile sense is all-important in infants. A baby recognizes its parents initially by touch. From the time we’re born our family’s touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The associations of self-worth and tactile sensations from our early years are still imbedded in our nervous system as adults. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love.

7. STIMULATES DOPAMINE

Everything everyone does involves protecting and triggering dopamine flow. Low dopamine levels play a role in the neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s as well as mood disorders such as depression. Dopamine is responsible for giving us that feel-good feeling, and it’s also responsible for motivation! Hugs stimulate brains to release dopamine, the pleasure hormone. Dopamine sensors are the areas that many stimulating drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine target. The presence of a certain kinds of dopamine receptors are also associated with sensation-seeking.

8. STIMULATES SEROTONIN

Reaching out and hugging releases endorphins and serotonin into the blood vessels and the released endorphins and serotonin cause pleasure and negate pain and sadness and decrease the chances of getting heart problems, helps fight excess weight and prolongs life. Even the cuddling of pets has a soothing effect that reduces the stress levels. Hugging for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.

Hugs balance out the nervous system. The skin contains a network of tiny, egg-shaped pressure centers called Pacinian corpuscles that can sense touch and which are in contact with the brain through the vagus nerve. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the nervous system – parasympathetic.

Case to Include the UCF (University of Central Florida) Football Team into the Final Four National Championship Playoffs

UCF is undefeated. Only four college football squads remain undefeated. If their North Carolina Tar Heels game was not cancelled because of a hurricane, UCF would be 11-0 also having soundly beaten a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, that includes undefeated Clemson Tigers and other colleges that have upset higher ranked teams.

Not only would this outcome be righteous, but it would eliminate any controversy about allowing one team over another school with a similar record, which had lost one or two games this season, from being included into the four-team playoff. Why should one single-loss team be chosen over another? This would be an objective, not subjective committee decision.

How else could UCF prove it is on-par with the Notre Dames and Alabamas of the world unless there was an actual match-up on the field.

Another reason to select UCF is based not only on their unbeaten performance but also their outstanding defensive and offensive prowess. Could Clemson, Notre Dame, or Alabama hold back UCF’s potent offense?

Not only is undefeated UCF deserving of a crack at the playoffs, having the longest two-season winning streak, and they are an exciting team to watch. Their entertainment value is very high.

Selecting UCF this post-season would give over 200 colleges hope that in coming years that they too could play for the National Championship.

Honestly, using the same ol’ measuring sticks and computer-generated models, the committee has ‘sort of screwed up’ for the last two years.

  • In 2016, Ohio State was selected as the fourth team and they got smoked (shutout) in the first round.
  • No team from the Big Ten in 2017, like Ohio State, was chosen last year in favor (giving the appearance of SEC conference bias and favoritism) allowing two of the four teams to be from the very same conference in a tournament that is supposedly a NATIONAL Championship playoff.

(For God’s sake) Look at their statistics:

  1. UCF has a quarterback with a marvelous 161.9 rating. No professional quarterback has even achieved this very high rating over the course of ten and eleven games!
  2. McKenzie Milton has passed for 24 touchdowns and thrown only 5 interceptions during ten games! He has also run for 9 touchdowns on 74 carries for close to 300 yards. Keep in mind that quarterback sacks and kneel-downs behind the line of scrimmage figure into statistics of those 291 total yards gained by running.
  3. The UCF has a total of 31 rushing touchdowns this season; that is an average of three per game. They have an average of 5.8 yards per carry with 444 carries totaling 2,577 yards. Few college teams have rushed for more than 250 yards every game!
  4. UCF’s place-kicker has NOT missed an extra point all year long! Matthew Wright is 58 for 58 and has scored 88 points (8.8/game). His longest field goal was from 47 yards. Not even Notre Dame’s career record-breaking senior kicker  – Justin Yoon – cannot boast these kinds of accuracy statistics this season.
  5. Statistics and algorithms can lie. If the Selection Committee ignores objective selection criteria (simply wins and losses) they are going to make mistakes again and continually be open to both valid and irrational rounds of criticism.
  6. UCF’s passing offense is also very exciting. They have scored 25 touchdowns by the pass (that is 56 TDs in all). Very few college teams have averaged more than 5 touchdowns a game. They average 17.8 yards a pass play. In their first ten games, UCF has amassed 2,715 yards with 183 catches!

Three receivers have made more than 35 catches, four more players have more than 15 receptions this far, and as previously mentioned UCF’s turnover ratio is phenomenal.

Take note that this analysis and recommendation is coming from a 64 year-old lifetime college football fan that grew up in South Bend, graduated with two degrees from a Big Ten Conference school in Southern Indiana, and am a huge, huge Coach Jim Harbaugh (University of Michigan and former Stanford and San Fran 49er) fan.

Of course, I would root for Michigan to be chosen over another one-loss team (the Wolverines only lost to Notre Dame on-the-road by a touchdown) if there was not another deserving undefeated team.

 

Fact: UCF is Undefeated at 10-0

 

Come on man! Please NCAA Selection Committee (please) be more objective and allow the three-game national championship playoff scheme to crown an undisputed national event. Even the “March Madness” national basketball tournament gives smaller college programs a chance to win and succeed.

LESSONS LEARNED – – – Those who have served in the office have some common observations about White House.

a) Talk to You Predecessors. Press secretaries indicated they learned a great deal from those who preceded them.

b) Don’t Reduce Reporters’ Opportunities or Venues for Receiving Information. You can add to what information reporters are given and opportunities there are to receive it, but you cannot subtract from it without paying a heavy cost.

c) 90% of Information You Are Dealing With Comes From the Press. While it is natural to think information one is dealing with in a White House is exclusively held, the contrary is true.

d) Don’t Hire People You Don’t Know.

e) An Inquisitive Press Corps Can Work in the Favor of the White House. While the White House spends a great deal of its energy trying to stop stories it does not like as well as redirecting reporters to stories they want covered, it can come to haunt a President and his staff.1

f) Don’t Sandbag the Press.

g) There Are Many Ways to Say ‘I Don’t Know’. All reporters really want is to be able to get the information they need and have it right when they get it.

h) Lying. Providing reporters with misinformation is a cardinal sin no matter whether it is willful or unintentional.

i) Be Wary of Adopting a Role of Persuader. The Press Office is the setting where official information is released not a place where persuasion is the central task.

j) Combining the Functions of Communications and/or Public Liaison with the Press Office. When the Press Office is combined with Communications is there is less control over Executive Branch information and less strategic planning done than is the case when the offices are independent units.

k) Personality Needs. A cool temperament works somewhat better than a hot tempered person.

Trump is “Gaslighting” American Voters – Can the USA Survive?!?

Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic used to gain power and maintain it… And it works too well, as President Donald J. Trump and his staff know.

Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. It works much better than you may think.

Anyone is susceptible to gaslighting, and it is a common technique of abusers, dictators, narcissists, and cult leaders. It is done slowly, so the victim doesn’t realize how much they’ve been brainwashed. For example, in the movie Gaslight (1944), a man manipulates his wife to the point where she thinks she is losing her mind.

In the book Gaslighting: Recognize Manipulative and Emotionally Abusive People – and Break Free, there is detail how “gaslighters” typically use the following techniques:

  1. They tell blatant lies.

You know it’s an outright lie. Yet they are telling you this lie with a straight face. Why are they so blatant? Because they’re setting up a precedent. Once they tell you a huge lie, you’re not sure if anything they say is true. Keeping you unsteady and off-kilter is the goal.

Newspapers have lost track of how many mistruths and outright lies the Trump Administration have spoken.

  1. They deny they ever said something, even though you have proof. 

You know they said they would do something; you know you heard it. But they out and out deny it. It makes you start questioning your reality—maybe they never said that thing. And the more they do this, the more you question your reality and start accepting theirs. Blame is directed away from the gaslighter.

Nor will they take responsibility (i.e. terrorist activities motivated by the President’s angry speeches and comments to and about the press).

  1. They use what is near and dear to you as ammunition. 

They know how important your kids are to you, and they know how important your identity is to you. So those may be one of the first things they attack. If you have kids, they tell you that you should not have had those children. They will tell you’d be a worthy person if only you didn’t have a long list of negative traits. They attack the foundation of your being.

  1. They wear you down over time.

This is one of the insidious things about gaslighting—it is done gradually, over time. A lie here, a lie there, a snide comment every so often…and then it starts ramping up. Even the brightest, most self-aware people can be sucked into gaslighting—it is that effective. It’s the “frog in the frying pan” analogy: The heat is turned up slowly, so the frog never realizes what’s happening to it.

Trump has been at it for almost two years in the presidency.

  1. Their actions do not match their words.

When dealing with a person or entity that gaslights, look at what they are doing rather than what they are saying. What they are saying means nothing; it is just talk. What they are doing is the issue.

  1. They throw in positive reinforcement to confuse you. 

This person or entity that is cutting you down, telling you that you don’t have value, is now praising you for something you did. This adds an additional sense of uneasiness. You think, “Well maybe they aren’t so bad.” Yes, they are. This is a calculated attempt to keep you off-kilter—and again, to question your reality. Also look at what you were praised for; it is probably something that served the gaslighter.

Republicans act like the end justifies the means (getting to the end point; namely, getting votes).

  1. They know confusion weakens people. 

Gaslighters know that people like having a sense of stability and normalcy. Their goal is to uproot this and make you constantly question everything. And humans’ natural tendency is to look to the person or entity that will help you feel more stable—and that happens to be the gaslighter.

The Republican Party is after votes.

  1. They project.

They are a drug user or a cheater, yet they are constantly accusing you of that. This is done so often that you start trying to defend yourself, and are distracted from the gaslighter’s own behavior.

Projection is a common psychological defense mechanism.

  1. They try to align people against you.

Gaslighters are masters at manipulating and finding the people they know will stand by them no matter what—and they use these people against you. They will make comments such as, “This person knows that you’re not right,” or “This person knows you’re useless too.” Keep in mind it does not mean that these people actually said these things. A gaslighter is a constant liar. When the gaslighter uses this tactic it makes you feel like you don’t know who to trust or turn to—and that leads you right back to the gaslighter. And that’s exactly what they want: Isolation gives them more control.

  1. They tell you or others that you are crazy.

This is one of the most effective tools of the gaslighter, because it’s dismissive. The gaslighter knows if they question your sanity, people will not believe you when you tell them the gaslighter is abusive or out-of-control. It’s a master technique.

  1. They tell you everyone else is a liar.

By telling you that everyone else (your family, the media) is a liar, it again makes you question your reality. You’ve never known someone with the audacity to do this, so they must be telling the truth, right? No. It’s a manipulation technique. It makes people turn to the gaslighter for the “correct” information—which isn’t correct information at all.

The more you are aware of these techniques, the quicker you can identify them and avoid falling into the gaslighter’s trap.

President Trump is remarkable in his implementation of these gaslighting techniques; justifying his actions.
